Description
Title
Mississippian
culture
;
replica
of the
Madonna
water
bottle
Description
5
'
tall
;
ceramic
; The
original
was
discovered
in
1876
by
Frances
Simonin
in a
small
mound
located
near
Cahokia
Mounds
site
in
Illinois
. The
vessel
was
apparently
made
to
hold
liquids
or
small
objects
. The
original
Madonna
was
dated
at
about
1000-1400
during
the
Mississippian
Period
. The
Madonna
water
bottle
represents
the
only
known
type
made
by
prehistoric
Indians
of the
Midwest
that
depicted
a
mother
nursing
a
child
.
Perhaps
the
artist
was
representing
fertility
, an
important
phenonenon
in this
agricultural
culture
. For this and
other
reasons
,
women
held
a
high
status
in the
community
. They were
responsible
for
farming
, and
one's
linage
was
traced
through
the
mothers
family
.
