Statue of Artemis |
Description |
9.5' tall ; glazed pottery; This statue is a 20th century reproduction of a 4th century BCE statue of Artemis. The Godess Artemis is of Greek origin, sometime before the seventh century, and is one of the 'twelve Olympians' of Greek mythology. She was known in Ephesus (current day Turkey) as the Goddess of Fertility. The oval objects that cover the statue are pomegranates, a symbol of fertility. The 'beetle' shown on the side of each leg is a Scarab, an Egyptian symbol of the resurrection. The crown of Artemis' headdress is a replica of the second temple to Artemis, built by Alexander the Great in about 350 BCE. |
