digeridoo
is
believed
to be the
world's
oldest
wind
instrument
,
dating
back
thousands
of
years
and
originating
as a
musical
instrument
of the
North
Australian
Aborigine
. A
digeridoo
is
traditionally
made
from
one
of
many
species
of
Eucalyptus
branches
or
saplings
. The
Eucalyptus
is
naturally
hollowed
out
by
termites
. The
varying
length
of the
wood
, its
thickness
, and its
shape
determine
which
key
the
instrument
will be in.
Shorter
lengths
yield
higher
pitches
. A
rim
of
beeswax
applied
to the
rim
of the
opening
creates
an
aperture
, or
mouthpiece
,
similar
in
size
to a
tuba
. The
instrument
is
decorated
with
ochre
paintings
that
symbolize
a
tribe's
food
and/or
totems.A
Didgeridoo
is
traditionally
played
accompanied
with
clapsticks

or by
tapping
out
rhythms
on the
side
of the
instruments
using
fingers
or
sticks
