small
ceramic
bull
(toro
,
toritos)
is
rooted
in the
indigenous
arts
of
Peru
but was
enriched
by the
arrival
of the
Spanish
conquistadors
. As a
symbol
of
strength
and
courage
,
it
was and
is
typically
Spanish
. But
it
was
adopted
by the
indigenous
peoples
,
used
for
ceremonial
rituals
, and
is
now
one
of the
most
important
forms
of
popular
arts
in
Latin
America
.
It
is
made
of
earthenware
in
many
sizes
and
painted
with
white
and
one
other
color
and has a
lock
of
hair
on the
forehead
.
It
is
usually
both
utilitarian
and
decorative
,
often
used
as a
vase
for
flowers
. As a
symbol
of
good
luck
it
is
often
placed
on the
roof
of a
new
home
.
Many
houses
and
business
in
Peru
have
Pucará
bulls
at their
entrance
. This
toro
was
made
in
Pucará
,
Peru
as
is
much
traditional
folk
art
in
Latin
America
.
