Wood nesting dolls; 12 cm. high. Matrioshka (mah-tree-osh-kah), which literally means "little mother" in Russian is a symbol. Traditionally shown in patterns of yellow, red, green, and black, she is identified with rebirth and renewal. Her body form is egg-shaped, her expression is one of love. The matrioshka dolls had their start with a group of artist designers at the Children's Educational Worlshop in Moscow, at the end of the 19th century. Intended to maintain a heartly tradition of wood turning and toymaking crafts, the matrioshka toys embody direct skill, charm, and family sentiment. Matroishka reminds us that we are never alone, for the people and expereinces of our life remain with us and help us grow |
