9.5 x 10 x 4' ; painted papier-mache ; 3/04 -Cracks along lower edge and lower left curl. The most popular afternoon (matinee) entertainment, especially with the more serious type of men, is the topeng: a masked play dealing with the exploits of local kings and warriors, and episodes of the wars and intrigues of Balinese history (babad). Two or three actors, usually aged men, play all the parts and impersonate all sorts of characters with great skill, from the half-witted servants and petulant prime ministers, to the heroic kings and cultured young princes. It was like magic to see an old man transform himself into a graceful young prince, simply by putting on a mask and dancing with delicacy, only to come out again as a lisping and idiotic clown. The Bali Indonesia Brong mask represents the happy times. He is the mythological protagonist in a drama that puts him against evil demons. This is played out in one of the most common dance dramas of Bali. The playful look of this deity gives one an idea of his personality, and hanging it on a wall gives both good luck and protection.
