Narzar boncuk (evil eye glass bead). |
Description |
Throughout the centuries it has been believed that the lucky evil eye is a protector. The Turkish eye will protect you from negativity. It is said that any negative wish placed on you will turn to a positive wish through the power of the eye. Jealousy, fear, and anger, along with any other negative emotions, will be transformed into positive emotions when the Eye is in place. In Turkey, all homes display the Nazar Eye for protection. It is placed in buildings, gardens, and windows, and hangs in most rooms, cars, and offices. It is believed to protect both young and old, and bring good luck to those that possess one. A nazar is an eye-shaped amulet believed to protect against negativity. The word "nazar" is derived from the Arabic word for "sight" or "seeing. It is a common sight in Turkey, Albania, Greece, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Armenia, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Azerbaijan, where the nazar is often hung in homes, offices, and cars, on children's clothing, or incorporated in jewelry and ornaments. The Turkish boncuk is a handmade glass bead characterized by a blue glass field with a blue or black dot superimposed on a white or yellow center. Historically, the blue bead has gained importance as an item of popular culture in Modern Turkey. Written documents and extant beads date as early as the 16th century BC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazar_%28amulet%29 |
