Description
Title
Decorated
cloth
.
Description
This
fabric
is
typical
of the
bright
turquoise
huipil
(blouse)
that the
women
wear
in
Santa
Catarina
Palopó
,
located
in the
west-central
part
of
Guatemala
.
People
represent
their
tribe
or
town
(pueblo)
by the
clothes
that they
wear
--
each
tribe
has its
own
distinct
trajes
(dress
or
suits
of
clothing
.
Although
today's
Maya-descended
peoples
proudly
wear
their
attire
as a
badge
of
where
they
live
, the
classification
actually
began
as a
dress
code
implemented
by
Spanish
colonial
officials
. They
wanted
to be
able
to
identify
their
subjects
by
community
of
origin
for
tax-collection
purposes
.
Guatemalan
textiles
are
general
very
tightly
woven
. This
tight
weave
is
achieved
using
a
back-strap
loom
. A
back-strap
loom
consists
of
two
sticks
or
bars
between
which
the
warps
are
stretched
.
One
bar
is
attached
to a
fixed
object
, and the
other
to the
weaver
usually
by
means
of a
strap
around
the
back
. The
weaver
leans
back
and
uses
his or her
body
weight
to
tension
the
warp
threads
of
loom
. To
open
spaces
between
the
warp
threads
, the
weaver
relaxes
tension
on the
warps
and
raises
the
string
heddles
.
