Title	Okina Noh mask
Description	3.5' ; glazed ceramic; Okina takes its origin from the traditional Genryu style Noh play. This mask of an old man has shaggy eyebrows, eyes that curve with laughter, and numerous wrinkles on the forehead and cheeks. His long white beard expresses wisdom. Noh is Japan's oldest form of theatre and was for members of the samurai class. It was an extremely stylized theatre form. Delicately carved Masks were used in Noh instead of makeup, and provided powerful means of expression. Any character being portrayed that was not a middle aged man living in the present would wear a mask. Therefore all characters portraying women, old men supernatural beings such as ghosts, deities, demons, and divine beasts, all wore Masks. There were nearly 80 different and distinct characters depicted by the Masks used by traditional Noh performers.
