Okina
takes
its
origin
from the
traditional
Genryu
style
Noh
play
. This
mask
of an
old
man
has
shaggy
eyebrows
,
eyes
that
curve
with
laughter
, and
numerous
wrinkles
on the
forehead
and
cheeks
. His
long
white
beard
expresses
wisdom
.
Noh
is
Japan's
oldest
form
of
theatre
and was for
members
of the
samurai
class
.
It
was an
extremely
stylized
theatre
form
.
Delicately
carved
Masks
were
used
in
Noh
instead
of
makeup
, and
provided
powerful
means
of
expression
. Any
character
being
portrayed
that was not a
middle
aged
man
living
in the
present
would
wear
a
mask
.
Therefore
all
characters
portraying
women
,
old
men
supernatural
beings
such
as
ghosts
,
deities
,
demons
, and
divine
beasts
,
all
wore
Masks
. There were
nearly
80
different
and
distinct
characters
depicted
by the
Masks
used
by
traditional
Noh
performers
.
