Description
Title
[Catrina
Calavera]
.
Description
This
colorful
statuette
or
figurine
is
that of a
woman
with a
skull
or
calavera
face
. This
is
'
Catrina
' a
caricature
of a
wealthy
woman
of the
nineteenth
century
wearing
a
feathery
hat
. She
mocks
anyone
who
takes
materialistic
pleasures
too
seriously
.
Catrina
is
considered
to be the
personification
of The
Day
of the
Dead
. She was
first
drawn
by the
20th
century
a
political
caricaturist
,
Jose
Guadalupe
Posada
. He
became
famous
for
making
Calaveras
as
arrogant
skeletons
dressed
in the
clothing
of the
wealthy
. In
pre-Columbian
times
the
images
of
skulls
and
skeletons
were
shown
often
in
paintings
,
pottery
, etc.
representing
rebirth
into the
next
stage
of
life
.
Calavera
literally
means
"
skull
", but in the
context
of
Day
of the
Dead
celebrations
,
it's
used
to
mean
skeleton
(instead
of
esqueleto)
,. The
Day
of the
Dead
is
celebrated
annually
in
Mexico
on
November
1st
.
It
is
a
uniquely
Mexican
celebration
, a
cultural
festival
resembling
Halloween
in
many
ways
, but with
more
cultural
and
spiritual
meaning
. The
holiday
combines
elements
of
Catholicism
with
ancient
Aztec
symbolism
, and
honors
the
spirits
of
departed
ancestors
and
loved
ones
who
are
believed
to
return
to
earth
to
join
in the
celebrations.
